His most characteristic works are Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring, Tropic of Capricorn and The Rosy Crucifixion trilogy (Sexus, Nexus, and Plexus), which are based on his experiences in New York and Paris.
Because of their sexual frankness, his major works were banned in Britain and the United States until the 1960s.
